I enjoyed Crazy Nights in its day but rarely play it now. When I do, I immediately recall my 1987/88 life, which is very much tied to Kiss and being a fan.

I love My Way. I used to really dig "I'll Fight Hell to Hold You" but Paul's high voice part does not live well in my ears... I noticed during some songs on MTV's Unplugged he very subtely altered his pitch and chose lower notes during typically high parts (I Still Love You was one). I thought that was cool, he is a master singer.

I think Bruce's solos really stand out on the Crazy Nights album, more than any other. I like his complexity and smoothness here. He's just so fluid and memorable. He really cared about his work. On later albums like Revenge and Carnival, he slowed it down and really squeezed the heck out of his well-chosen notes, a definite change of style that I also liked very much.

I think Turn On The Night is a gem here. Reason to Live is too Heart-ish for my taste, and Bang Bang You is kinda silly. No No No has a neato riff (near the end) that is just wasted in this tune. Hell or High Water is honest, as is Good Girl Gone Bad. Lots of Lennon influence on GGGB, at least I hear it that way (The "she ain't searchin' she knows the score" slower part). I like the dynamics in this tune.

Thief in The Night isn't as powerful as Wendy O's version, which leads to a comment about the production. There isn't a lot of low end on the Crazy Nights album. Ron Nevison had a certain sound, that's what he was hired for, but I think Nevision's 1986 The Ultimate Sin (Ozzy) sounds better. I think Randy Castillo's floor toms on Ultimate Sin have more warmth to them.

There were at least two tunes recorded at the Crazy Nights sessions or during this time period, Sword and Stone and Time Traveller. I think both are stronger than Bang Bang You and When Your Walls Come Down. I hope Paul reworks these lost tunes one day. "Time is a healer, time is a stealer, time is an Angel, Time is the devil that flies". Anyone in young love knows exactly what Paul is saying... I'd love to hear a fleshed version on his next solo album.
